THE BYRON NELSON CUP

What is the Byron Nelson Cup?

The Byron Nelson Cup is a season-long competition in which Senior GGA Members may accumulate points in each Cup eligible Tournament based upon their Net finish against all other Byron Nelson Cup participants.  At the conclusion of the Senior GGA Championship, the top 32 Cup point earners and alternates will compete for the Byron Nelson Cup and cash prizes.

How does it work?

Have you found yourself finishing in good position in a number of tournaments throughout the year and wished we had an event that rewarded the players who played great all year? Then this is the right event for you.

The Byron Nelson Cup competition is an optional season long event. To participate, GGA Senior Members must pay a separate, one time, annual $31 entry fee any time prior to the GGA Senior Championship. Please note, initial sign up and entry for the Nelson Cup must occur by the tournament cutoff date in order to have that tournament count. Only those GGA Senior Cup eligible tournament scores posted after signing up for the Byron Nelson Cup competition will earn Cup Points. A GGA Senior Member is only required to sign up one time and pay his $31 entry fee to be a Nelson Cup Participant. At the conclusion of each Cup Tournament, all Cup participants will earn Cup points based on their Net finish against all Cup participants.

You are eligible to win Nelson Cup points once you sign up for the Byron Nelson Cup competition and pay the $31 entry fee.  Your signup for the Byron Nelson Cup competition must occur by the cutoff date for that tournament to count and qualify you to win Nelson Cup points for all remaining Cup Eligible GGA Senior tournaments you play in.  Please note that you will not receive any points for GGA Senior Tournaments you played in before signing up for the Byron Nelson Cup competition.

By utilizing Net scores throughout the season as well as in the Byron Nelson Cup Finals, it allows us the opportunity to compete fairly across all Flights.

After each Cup Tournament, Cup Points earned in that Cup Tournament and Year-To-Date Cup Points Standings will be posted on our GGA web site along with other Tournament results.

At the conclusion of the GGA Senior Championship, the top 32 Cup Point earners from the entire season will be announced and those players will have an opportunity to compete in the Byron Nelson Cup Finals (2 day Cup Tournament) for a chance to win the Byron Nelson Cup and one of the cash prizes for the top 16 Byron Nelson Cup Finals participants. There will be a $26 entry fee to compete in the Byron Nelson Cup Finals. Similar to the Fed Ex Cup on the PGA Tour, the top 16 Byron Nelson Cup Finals participants will have a chance to win the Byron Nelson Cup and one of the cash prizes.

You cannot win the Byron Nelson Cup or prize money if you do not play in the Cup Finals or are Disqualified or Withdraw from the Cup Finals.

Will I be allowed to compete in the Byron Nelson Cup and The Grapevine Cup?

Yes. Any GGA Senior Members may compete in both the Byron Nelson Cup and the Grapevine Cup by signing up and paying separate fees. In order to earn points for the Byron Nelson Cup, the GGA Senior Member must compete in the monthly qualifying Byron Nelson Cup tournaments. He must also separately compete in the monthly qualifying Grapevine Cup tournaments. Points earned in the monthly GGA Senior events only earn Byron Nelson Cup points. Points earned in the regular GGA events only earn Grapevine Cup points.

What is the age qualification to compete in the Byron Nelson Cup?

Any GGA Member who is 55 years of age or older is eligible to participate in the Byron Nelson Cup.

Which tournaments are included?

Each tournament on the current GGA Senior Tournament schedule with the exception of the May 2 Person 6/6/6 Tournament will be Cup Point earning events.  Cup Points are not available for Match Play tournaments.

How many places earn Cup Points in each Cup Tournament?

The 80 lowest Net Score Cup participants will earn points based upon their Net finish against other Cup participants. We will utilize 100% of each Cup participant’s handicap for the purposes of calculating Net finishes.

How will I know my position on a monthly basis in the Byron Nelson Cup standings?

At the conclusion of each Nelson Cup Tournament, a complete list of Year-To-Date Cup Point earnings for each Nelson Cup-participating Member will be produced and posted to the GGA website. At the conclusion of the GGA Senior Championship, a final list of Nelson Cup Points by participating player will be produced showing the final standings for Byron Nelson Cup points. The 32 highest Cup Point earners and alternates will be eligible to play in the Byron Nelson Cup Finals.

Does this mean we are changing the number of places we award prizes to in each regular tournament throughout the season?

Because The Byron Nelson Cup (and for that matter, The Grapevine Cup competition, also) is a separate, yearlong competition that involves only those Members who choose to sign up and participate, the conducting of The Byron Nelson Cup as explained in this document will have no impact on how payouts are structured for our regular Senior (or GGA) Tournaments. The payouts for our Senior Tournaments will be as advertised for those Tournaments.

Why are we using Net scores rather than Gross scores?

Since Nelson Cup Participants will be competing against all other Nelson Cup Participants in each Nelson Cup Tournament, we have a desire to create an equal opportunity for every Nelson Cup Participant in the yearlong Cup Competition to earn a spot in the Nelson Cup Finals. Using Net scores to determine order of finish in each Cup Tournament compares everyone’s performance throughout the year to par and the course index to create this equal opportunity.

How many events must I compete in throughout the year to qualify?

You may compete is as many or few Cup Tournaments as you wish while competing for the Byron Nelson Cup. Participation is purely optional. Once a player declares he wishes to compete for the Cup and pays his $31 entry fee, he can play in as many Nelson Cup Tournaments as he wishes. Keep in mind, that the more tournaments played the better chance you have to earn Cup Points and be one of the top 32 Nelson Cup point earners and alternates to make it into The Nelson Cup Finals and compete for the Byron Nelson Cup.  Keep in mind also the 4-tournament requirement to participate in the GGA Senior Championship where you have the opportunity to win points twice by playing both days.

What format will the Byron Nelson Cup Finals be?

The Byron Nelson Cup Finals will be a 2-day, individual stroke play event using Net scores to determine the Byron Nelson Cup Champion. Each of the top 32 Nelson Cup Point earners and alternates will pay a $26 entry fee to compete in the Byron Nelson Cup Finals. Each of the 32 Cup point earners and alternates will compete in the Cup Finals using his then-current GGA handicap, which will be computed after the conclusion of the GGA Senior Championship.

The Nelson Cup Finals Participant whose total of year-to-date Nelson Cup Points and Cup Points won in the Nelson Cup Final will be declared the Byron Nelson Cup Champion and win the 1st place prize. The Cup Finals participant whose total Cup Points (using the same formula as 1st place) is the second highest will win the 2nd place prize. This formula and process will be repeated until the top 16 Cup Point earners and alternates are identified and awarded their prizes.

How will ties be addressed?

Any and all ties for positions during the Byron Nelson Cup Tournaments and through the Cup Finals will be addressed and settled using the same tie breaker steps used by our Handicap Chairman in GGA Senior Monthly Tournaments.

When will the Byron Nelson Cup Finals be played?

The Byron Nelson Cup Finals will be a 2-day Tournament played at the end of each Tournament Year. The dates of the Nelson Cup Finals will be listed on the Senior Tournament Schedule for each year.

How much money is available in the Byron Nelson Cup?

All prizes awarded after the conclusion of the Byron Nelson Cup Finals will be cash. The total cash pot available will depend on the number of entrants. The 32 highest Nelson Cup Point earners and alternates – as computed thru the GGA Senior Championship as described above – will pay a $26 entry fee to compete in the Byron Nelson Cup Finals. All of these funds will be the Byron Nelson Finals Cup prize fund. The top 16 Byron Nelson Finals points finishers plus ties (season Points plus Byron Nelson Cup Finals Points) will earn a payout from this fund.

If for example, 80 players declare they wish to compete for the Nelson Cup and pay the entry fee, then the prize fund begins with $2,400. In the Nelson Cup Finals event, the top 32 Cup Point earners and alternates who play will pay the entry fee to compete creating an additional $800. The total Byron Nelson Cup Finals prize fund would be $3,200 and awarded proportionately to the top 16 places.

How many players from each flight will be in the Byron Nelson Cup Finals?

There is no set number from any flight. Each player competes for Cup Points against all other Cup participants during the season. At the conclusion of the GGA Senior Championship, we will determine Cup Point earners standings among all players; and the top 32 and ties will be in the Byron Nelson Cup Finals. Every participant has an equal opportunity to qualify as he is competing for Cup Points on a Net basis in each of the monthly Byron Nelson Cup Tournaments.

Which tee box will everyone play from in the Byron Nelson Cup Final event?

The Byron Nelson Cup finalists, as described above, will compete from the White Tees.

If I make a hole-in-one during the Byron Nelson Cup Finals will I be eligible for the hole-in-one prize fund?

Because the Byron Nelson Cup Finals is defined as an extra GGA event, you will not be eligible to win the hole in one prize money in the Cup Finals. Per the GGA by-laws (please see GGA website www.grapevinega.org), extra events such as the Away Tournament, Grapevine Cup Finals, Byron Nelson Cup Finals, and Match Play Tournaments are not eligible for the hole in one prize fund.

Will my scores in the Byron Nelson Cup Finals count as scores for my GGA handicap?

Yes.  Scores posted in the Byron Nelson Cup Finals will be recorded and posted to the GGA website. Those scores will then be used in the normal handicap determination process.

How will ‘unexpected happenings’ be addressed?

The GGA Officers and Board will review and make decisions on all ‘unexpected happenings’ and situations not covered in this document and their decision will be final. Should such a situation occur, please contact a GGA Officer and/or your Flight Representative immediately to discuss the situation.

We look forward to your participation in the Byron Nelson Cup competition!
